Description
What Is Oxidized Bitumen?
Oxidized Bitumen are produced by the addition of processed air. Passing hot air over bitumen can be used to change its physical features for particular commercial applications. This process gives the bitumen more rubbery characteristics than its original composition, resulting in harder bitumen.
The air is introduced under pressure into soft bitumen while maintaining a constant temperature. The reaction of the introduced oxygen and bitumen components produces compounds with a larger molecular weight. As a result, the Asphaltenes and Maltenes content rises, resulting in a harder mix. The ductility and temperature susceptibility of this harder mix are reduced.
The oxidized bitumen products’ nomenclature and classification are based on a combination of the temperature at which the bitumen reaches a specific “softness” when heated up, as represented by the ring and ball softening point test, and the penetration value.
Oxidized Bitumen Grades
This is a type of bitumen produced by blowing air into pure bitumen. It has a lower penetration grade and a higher softening point than pure bitumen. It is classified into three types based on its softening point and penetration grade: low, medium, and hard oxidized bitumen.
Types of Bitumen Grade of Bitumen:
Oxidized Bitumen 75/25
30/40 bitumen means penetration grade bitumen type which its penetration is in the range 30 to 40 mm at 25 degree Celsius. Bitumen 30/40 is a hard grade of bitumen. This grade is one of the most used bitumen grades for road construction in tropical areas.
As the hot weather of these regions can be a challenge for mixtures of asphalt, bitumen 30/40 is offered due to its high air blowing and penetration value.
Bitumen grade 30/40 is produced from the vacuum residue in a refinery.

Advantages of Oxidized Bitumen
One of the most significant advantages of Oxidized Bitumen is that it is completely water resistant, highly flexible, and long-lasting. It is also chemically very stable. In addition to being completely water resistant, oxidized bitumen is a very flexible compound that is not only chemically stable but also very durable. Consequently, Oxidized Bitumen has some distinct technical advantages that make it a highly sought-after compound in a variety of applications.
The high softening temperatures of blown bitumen make it an excellent sealant for preventing bleeding in high temperature applications. Bitumen in blown grade should be broken up into small pieces (for blown grade in molded cake form) and slowly heated to the application temperature of 220ºC to 230ºC.
The oxidized bitumen is used in a variety of industrial applications, including sealing saw cuts and joints with minimal predicted movement, roofing, flooring, waterproofing, mastics, and pipe coating, and is also used for the manufacture of sound dampening felts, under carriage sealant, roofing felt, electric cable joints, joint filling compound, sealant compound, bituminous marine mastic for oil and gas pipeline joints, and many other applications under controlled temperature conditions. For instance, as an anti-slip layer compound in the piling industry and as sound dampening in the automotive industry.
Their wide temperature range prevents bleeding in high temperature applications. Blown asphalt is an asphaltic adhesive substrate for asphalt membranes. Metal and concrete protective coating under atmospheric conditions. Blown asphalt is impregnation of coating of papers and boards. Bonding agent for tiles and mastic also bonding agent for cork plates and adhesive for roofing felts. The Blown asphalt is adhesive for laminated boards to protection for electrical wires.
Oxidized Bitumen has a wide variety of industrial and commercial applications:
This technique of processing can provide bitumen with a reduced penetration, which can be used for road paving.
Oxidized bitumen is available in various packing including 25kg melt able bag, craft bag and steel drum also bulk vessel.
25 or 50kg meltable polyamide bag.
The melting temperature of the bag is 160~180C. Blown asphalt packed in 25 or 50Kg Craft bag. The size of bag is 90x40cm and easily palletized 1 ton on wooden pallet. Blown asphalt packed in carton mold. It is easy to handle and safe for shipment. Blown asphalt packed in 185Kg new steel drum. Normally low softening point blown asphalt pack in drum. Blown asphalt in bulk. The bulk shipment could be tanker, ISO tank and vessel.
